Sarah Edmondson branding

Edmondson spent over a decade as a member of NXIVM, a controversial self-help organization based in Albany, until early 2017.

In January 2017, prior to leaving the organization, Sarah received an invitation to join NXIVM’s “secret sisterhood” called DOS.

To enter DOS, the members had to provide compromising materials or potentially damaging information about themselves as “collateral” to their “master” and get branded with the initials of NXIVM’s founder Keith Raniere and Smallville actress Allison Mack, a DOS master and an important figure of the group.

The branding occurred in Mack’s Albany home in March 2017. At first, Sarah thought of branding as getting “an identical tattoo the size of a dime.”

But the process involved “holding each of the other members down on a table as NXIVM’s resident female doctor dragged a red-hot cauterizing pen across the sensitive area just below their bikini line. The women screamed in pain as the smell of burnt flesh filled the air.”

The 43-year-old left NXIVM two and a half months after the branding. In A&E Investigates’ docuseries Cults and Extreme Belief, Edmondson told,

“When I left, I thought the branding was the most horrific abuse that was happening in Nxivm. I actually think that branding does not even compare to the other emotional abuses that have been going on for decades.”

Raniere and Mack were arrested in 2018 and could face a minimum of 15 years and up to life in prison if convicted of all charges.
