Eddie spent his early years in Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands, along with his parents and older brother, Alex Van Halen. The family moved to Pasadena, California ‘with approximately $50 and a piano’ in February 1962.
Both brothers started learning piano at the age of six, commuting from Pasadena to San Pedro to study with a piano teacher, Stasys “Stanley” Kalvaitis. Initially, Eddie took up drums, and his brother played guitar. However, when Alex switched his interest to drum, he quickly surpassed Eddie. After hearing Alex’s performance of The Surfaris’ drum solo in the song “Wipe Out,” Eddie decided to play electric guitar instead, devoting hours to mastering the skills.
The 65 years old musician attended Hamilton Elementary School and Pasadena City College. As a matter of fact, it is at Pasadena college where he met the flamboyant rock vocalist and lead singer of Van Halen, David Lee Roth. Additionally, Eddie and his brother are naturalized U.S. citizens. His father died of complications from alcoholism in 1986 at the age of 66.
