Leal’s mother, Angelita, is Filipino, while her father was a African-American military policeman. Her parents broke up before she was born. Leal was later adopted by her stepfather, Jesse Leal, a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force and a police officer at Clark Air Base, Philippines.
She lived in the Philippines until the age of 6, where she attended a prayer-school. The 47-year-old later moved back to the US with her family and settled in Fresno, California. She ha a younger sister, Kristina Manankil, from her mother’s marriage to Elmer Manankil.
Sharon graduated from Roosevelt High School of the Arts, located in Fresno, California. She later studied with Seth Riggs, a voice coach, after winning a vocal scholarship at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.
